Martial Art Facts and Myths!
As intelligent adult readers, I want you to always have the straight scoop on the Martial Arts. So I thought I would take some time to “de-bunk” some of the misconceptions about the Martial Arts. Myth (in fact, the #1 all-time “full of baloney” idea about the Martial Arts): The law says that a Black Belt has to register his hands with the local police department. Fact: No such law exists! A Black Belt has the same legal right to protect himself as everybody else, and the same liability, responsibility to not use skills offensively as anybody else! Myth: Black Belts are invincible. Fact: Nope. They are highly skilled, and way more likely to be able to defend themselves than non-Black Belts…but nobody is invincible. Myth: It takes a whole lifetime of study to become a Black Belt. Fact: Not so! Training 2 – 3 times a week, you can earn your Black Belt in four years. Myth: Black Belt represents the end of a students Martial Art training. Fact: Hardly! For the serious Martial Art student, Black Belt is just the beginning! Many Black Belts continue to study for their entire lives. It’s a cool thing to get a Black Belt…but the best thing is to be a Black Belt…by continuing to study after earning the Black Belt. Myth: Martial Arts are mostly for young kids. Fact: Nope! I know plenty of Black Belts…even Masters, who didn’t start their Martial Art training until they were in their twenties and thirties! Myth: Black Belt means you are a tough guy. Fact: Not exactly. A true Black Belt is a tough guy, but he doesn’t go around acting like a tough guy. In fact, the guys that I consider to be true Black Belts conduct themselves, at all times, like gentlemen. This is the true spirit of the Martial Arts. Most of the time, we are safe. We are in control of what happens to us. We don’t make strategic mistakes. But...regardless of how organized we are, regardless of how well we have planned, occasionally something happens unexpectedly. We: * lock our keys in the car * we run out of gas * we get lost * somebody comes to the door late at night None of these situations are difficult to handle...if you’ve prepared in advance. Here is one of the simple “StreetSmart” truths: We are vulnerable when something happens to knock us out of our usual way of doing things. Mistakes are made when you are caught off guard. When something unexpected happens, caution and safety are lost in the commotion. For example: You return to your car, late at night. You can’t find your keys in your purse...because they are in your ignition. And you don’t have a spare. You can’t get to your car phone. So you find yourself walking, alone, through a bad part of town, trying to find a pay phone. Get the idea? Guess what? So do the “bad guys.” They have a built-in radar. How to Remain Calm in an Emergency Situation
Dear Friend, It would be nice if we never had any emergency situations, wouldn’t it? But the bad news is that we probably will. However, the good news is that we can handle virtually any emergency situation effectively if we keep our wits about us. When a situation is out of control, we will be okay as long as we don’t lose control. So...how do we remain calm and in control when confronted with an emergency situation? There are 5 keys. 1. Breathing: When an emergency arises, a few deep, slow breaths will calm you, and prepare you to act. 2. Balance: Physical balance is crucial. Distribute your weight evenly; flex your knees; weight should be on the balls of your feet. 3. Brief pause; look, think: Take a brief pause to let your brain kick in. You don’t want to let a panic response take over. 4. Relax muscles: Consciously loosen your facial muscles, your shoulders, and your hands. Other muscles will automatically loosen. 5. Move somewhat slowly, with purpose: Seldom will an emergency situation call for hurried motion. Use visualization to practice these steps. When thoughts of an emergency situation pop into your mind, instead of feeling worry or panic, spend a moment visualizing yourself handling the situation in the above manner. Of course, we don’t like to dwell on negative images. But we must replace the “worry and panic picture” with a “calm, controlled picture”...and then move on.
